The Harvey Wallbanger
This vibrant 1970s cocktail is as fun as its name suggests—a refreshing mix of vodka, orange juice, and the herbal vanilla kiss of Galliano. Legend claims it was invented to cure a surfer’s hangover (and possibly his heartbreak).

Glass: Highball
Serves: 1
Prep Time: 3 minutes
Ingredients:
- 30 ml (1 oz) vodka (use a neutral, crisp style like Absolut or Stolichnaya)
- 120 ml (4 oz) fresh orange juice (chilled, preferably blood orange for depth)
- 15 ml (0.5 oz) Galliano L’Autentico
- Ice (cubed or cracked)
- Garnish: Orange wheel or dehydrated citrus slice
Method:
- Build the Base:
- Fill a highball glass with ice to the brim.
- Pour in the vodka, followed by the orange juice. Stir gently 3–4 times to combine.
- The Float:
- Slowly layer the Galliano over the back of a spoon to float it atop the drink (this creates the signature “sunrise” effect).
- Garnish & Serve:
- Slide an orange wheel onto the rim or drop it into the glass.
- Serve with a straw to encourage sipping through the Galliano cloud.
Pro Tips:
✔ Galliano Substitute: No herbal liqueur? Try 10 ml vanilla syrup + 5 ml Sambuca for a similar sweetness with anise depth.
✔ Texture Twist: Add 15 ml vanilla cream soda for a frothy, retro vibe.
✔ For a Mocktail: Skip the vodka, use orange-mango nectar, and float 5 ml vanilla syrup.
Serving Suggestion:
Pair with brunch dishes like eggs Benedict or enjoy poolside with salty snacks.
